Cold Spark or Aerial Fireworks? How Your Venue Decides

A practical comparison of cold-spark fountains and aerial fireworks: where each one works, how they differ in arrangements, safety and cost, and why an enclosed hall settles the question on its own.

Many people who contact us ask for “fireworks” while picturing something else entirely: that silver fountain rising from the stage floor behind the couple. The two are completely different — in the technology, in the arrangements, and in the venues each one suits.

Why it’s called “cold”

Cold-spark fountains don’t work by combustion the way fireworks do. A fine metal alloy is heated electrically until it glows and is pushed upward, producing a column of sparks that reads visually like fireworks but cools very quickly in the air.

In practice that means you can pass a hand through the top of the column without burning — which is why these sit directly above a stage and behind people, rather than tens of metres away.

An important caveat: “cold” does not mean “risk-free.” The unit itself gets hot, the material at the nozzle is genuinely hot, and there remains a minimum clearance from low ceilings, drapes, and sprinkler heads. Anyone who tells you it’s completely safe and can go anywhere without calculation doesn’t understand what they’re selling.

When the venue decides on its own

Enclosed hall → cold spark, no discussion. Aerial fireworks are never used inside buildings. If someone offers you that, decline.

Tight residential perimeter → usually cold spark. If the nearest occupied window is metres away, the problem isn’t only regulatory — it’s practical. Shell reports at midnight end the evening with a complaint, not applause.

Near a flight path → cold spark. Shell altitude is taken seriously near airports.

Villa or resthouse with an open yard and wide surroundings → aerial is possible, decided by the survey.

Stadium, waterfront, or large open ground → aerial, and this is where the cost earns itself.

Can you combine them?

Yes, and we usually do at larger weddings: cold spark inside the hall for the entrance, then an aerial display in the grounds for the finale or as guests leave. The sequencing gives you two distinct moments instead of one, and neither competes with the other because they’re separated in both place and time.

The cost difference

Cold spark generally costs less, but not because the technology is cheaper — because everything around it is lighter: simpler arrangements, no wide launch perimeter to secure, a smaller crew, and shorter setup.

The trade-off is that an aerial display is what people outside the event see. If part of the point is to be seen from a distance — a commercial opening, a national occasion, a large-attendance event — cold spark won’t serve that purpose, however beautiful it looks inside the hall.

How we decide with you

We always start with a site survey and come out of it with a written recommendation. If the answer is that your venue won’t carry an aerial display, we say so early — before pricing, not after. Selling you a display your site can’t host means a display cancelled on the day, and that costs us more than it costs you.
